My Grandma’s Gift – Sumathi’s Hair Care Routine, Hair Loss Experience and Homemade Shikakai Recipe

Hi Beautiful ladies!

Hope all is well! First of all, I would like to thank Lancy for giving me an opportunity to write about my hair care routine. Regarding my hair care, Since I was born till my college days I was completely taken care by my Grandmother. Ofcource, my haircare has also been her responsibility.

It’s how it was.. She uses homemade coconut oil for my hair. She applies it in the every strand of the hairs and braid it till the end in such a way the ends are not exposed to sunlight. She would give me a hot oil bath every weekend usually with sesame oil. After hair wash, just before my hair dries out completely she will again oil my hair and tie it tightly. Every morning she made me drink curry leaves + curd mixture (Finely grinded fresh curry leaves made into small balls and soaked in curd overnight).

No shampoos or conditioners used on my hair. As a result, I had a thigh level strong, healthy and voluminous hair. She used either one of the following stuffs to wash my hair.

My Hair:

Homemade Shikakai powder

Shikakai –  1/2 kg

Green grams – 1/4  kg

Dried neem leaves – 50 gm

Dried curry leaves – 50 gm

Fenugreek – 50 gm

Brahmi – 50 gm

Hibiscus 5 petals flowers and leaves – 50 gm

Reetha – 50 gm

Vettiver – 50 gm

Karboga rice – 25 gm

Dried lemon peels – 20 nos

Dried amla – 10 nos

Sun dry and grind all the ingredients together. Your shikakai hair wash powder is ready to use! You can also check this recipe on homemade shikakai powder.

Instant Hibiscus shampoo – turns grey hair to black

You can also use raw Hibiscus leaves to wash hair. We just have to get some fresh leaves and grind it thoroughly. If you want you can extract the juice alone. Instant hibiscus shampoo is ready :) It will be easy while washing the hair. If you have grey hair this shampoo on continuous usage will turn grey hair into brown and then into black. It also adds shine to hair and promotes faster hair growth.

Fenugreek Shampoo – A natural conditioner that aids hair growth

Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in water at night. In the morning, grind it well and apply it in the hair. After an hour wash the hair. No Shampoo required. It lathers very well. You need little more effort to wash the fenugreek particles off your hair. That’s all. We are done. It’s a well known hair care recipe for years. It leaves the hair shiny, soft and healthy. It also promotes hair growth.

My hair loss story:

Here comes my sad story. :( A Six months earlier I was suffering out of typhoid. I lost weight abnormally followed by heavy hair fall. In just 2 months my hair was like a line drawn in a paper using pencil. It was that worst. Till I got completely recovered I stopped all this a while. Then I got my hair cut done. Now as am following my Grandma’s routine again I see improvement in my care growth. I am getting my volume back gradually. Below is the picture of mine as of now.

Hair Gyan of my Grandma:

  • Never expose hair tip in sunlight.
  • Iron rich food intake.
  • No chemical products on hair.
  • Stay out of dirt.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • No hot water for hair wash.
  • Salmon intake atleast once a week.

No tension. Relax! :) Have a great day!
