Does Mustard Oil Help Hair Growth?

Posted on September 15, 2013October 5, 2025 by Lanceek

Hello All!

Growing out long hair isn’t a quick process but it is what we worry about, after we get a bad hair cut. Isn’t it? I have had such experiences before. When I came across few hair care blogs today, I found out people claim that mustard oil helps hair grow 2 inches a month! Means 24 inches a year whereas human hair grows 6 inches per year as per research?

I surfed and surfed and found out some really interesting facts on mustard oil for hair growth. So does it really make your hair grow super fast? Let us check!

Does-Mustard-Oil-Help-Hair-Growth

Mustard Oil Hair Benefits:

  • Mustard oil is thick in consistency and smells pungent. It moisturizes hair deeply, leaving it soft, smooth and conditioned.
  • If used on regular basis, mustard oil removes dandruff and makes scalp clean.
  • It acts as an amazing massage oil to promote blood circulation in scalp.
  • Mustard oil help hair growth if used every week before rinsing your hair. Your scalp should be well massaged with this oil one hour before hair wash.

The above mentioned points show that mustard oil acts like any other oil to condition hair and scalp. But what’s so special in it to make your hair grow super fast? Eager to know??!

That is the heat! Yes. Haven’t you heard that human hair grows out faster in summer than in winter? It is because of the ‘heat’ or you can even called it warmness.

Mustard oil has the capacity to warm up your scalp, thus increasing the blood circulation in great amounts and thus, promoting hair growth up to a great extent! Mustard powder can also be mixed with mayonnaise and olive oil to make your homemade mustard hair growth hair mask.

I don’t believe that it would make your hair 2 inches longer in a month :-P but what I do believe is that, it will encourage blood circulation inside scalp than any other natural remedy. If you are planning to use mustard for hair growth, make sure to use it only in small amounts as it may burn sensitive skin. (As mustard is a spice!)

I have only used clove oil till date to stimulate hair growth – which you can check in my homemade hair growth stimulator recipe.

Mustard oil is something new to me in my hair care regime. But I am planning to try it out very soon and check whether mustard oil help hair growth or not. May be twice in a month. Are you going to give a try too?? Who hates long hair?? Hmm?? :-)

UPDATED; October 5, 2025.
My love for mustard oil continues, but I’ve been using the Lancemade Hair Growth Oil. It smells of fresh leaves and sunlight. This is something I’ve been making and using for years. Keeps my hair in best possible form with same intense mustard oil growth benefits for the scalp.

I went to Rajasthan once and was forced to eat foods cooked with mustard oil..
From that time, I never ever wanted to touch mustard..
But then, I’ll definitely try using it for my hair :)

hey hi…ya sorry lancy for such a late reply.

mustard is not a spice lan its a condiment. its used in cooking only for digestive purposes and adds a bit of is own flavor that’s all

it doesn’t irritate scalp even if used alone undiluted. i have sensitive scalp so ya i tried it always and not once it made my scalp problematic. and yes it makes your hair grow like at least 1 inch a month :-D :-D

using mustard oil in hair care regime is a common practice in north india, especially uttar pradesh… i think coz of abundant mustard production!… it really moisturize hair and prevents split ends.. :)

Hey Lancy, what about Vatika Mustard Oil? What I like about it is that it had amla in it as well. And Vatika is a trusted brand as well. But would you recommend that for hair growth?

You mentioned that you have a “homemade hair growth stimulator recipe”. If possible can you share that?
