My Hair Spa at Home to Get Shiny Hair in a DAY : Tutorial and Before & After Pictures

The taunting (monsoon) weather shows no mercy here! In drying monsoons, I’ve struggled with tangled, dry hair no matter how well I condition it. Oil massage (with my favorite MABH formula) + hair wash routine twice a week helps a lot however, there are these oh-so-lazy days weeks when I SKIP oiling! I had been hospitalized lately and completely skipped oiling for more than a week. It has been more than week (or even 10 days?) since I oiled and washed my hair! I was in free hair and loose braids all the time.

So what it gifted me in return? Dry, rough and stupid hair! (Refer the pics) I literally cry when I get bad hair days because dryness causes split ends and breakage, resulting slow hair growth! (When your hair breaks, it takes forever to grow out!)

Though getting back to an oiling routine helps, it takes a week or two to get back that shiny lovable hair! But hey.. I found a new trick (all natural) to repair the dehydrated and damaged hair in a day! I am following it for few months now with very satisfactory results. It is the coconut-rose hair mask I make at home!! Its a spa like home treatment which costs you very less – but amazes you with great results – Naturally! I tried it yesterday as my health is getting better. So I thought I would share the process and pictures with you all! :)

P.S: If you are following MABH regularly, you might be already knowing that I am going to color my hair today! I’ll be sharing the tutorial and photos tomorrow. Hence, I thought a good home spa treatment before coloing would protect my hair. Now that I am going to color my hair, I can flaunt it with all the shine!

Home Hair Spa – Ingredients, Steps and Photos

Things you’ll need:

  • MABH fast growth hair oil (Lancemade hair growth oil – renamed, but same formula)
  • Coconut milk
  • Dried rose petal powder
  • A small mixing bowl
  • Vitamin E oil/Olive oil (Optional)
  • A mild shampoo (SLS & paraben free if possible)
  • Hair conditioner (Optional)

ingredients

Before moving to the tutorial, have a look at my lifeless hair that hasn’t been oiled, rinsed or maintained since a week. Thanks to my ill health and the weather.

Now go ahead and read the process!

Step 1:

Comb and detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb. Be careful with your hair not to break while it detangling. Though I hate this part, its a MUST do before starting your spa.

Step 2:

I often use the Lancemade Herbal Hair Growth Oil during this step.  Its silky texture and herbal aroma make the spa experience feel truly indulgent. And slightly warm it in a double boiler. (I use it because it brings out maximum shine!). However, you can also try other natural oils! Stay away from chemical/mineral/scented oils/colored hair oils! A mild herbal oil or even a plain cold pressed virgin coconut oil or olive oil will do more good! (compared to the scented/chemical filled ones!) D0 not heat the oil directly as it kills the goodness of the herbs; only double boiler please!

Step 3:

Now rub the warm oil onto your fingers and apply it concentrating on the hair roots and scalp. Start from the back of your scalp and cover the entire scalp area. Take some more oil and apply it near the hair line. Massage it head softly with your finger tips for 3-10 minutes. If someone else can do this for you, its going to be more relaxing! Don’t forget the ENDS of your hair. Concentrate more on the split end prone area.

P.S: Don’t apply too much pressure on your scalp; this makes your hair fall out. Hair fall during oiling/massaging/spa treatments is very normal. The hair which are about to FALL comes off (at the end of its telegon phase) so please don’t panic! You are actually increasing the circulation of your scalp and promoting new hair growth. So stop questioning yourself why do you lose much hair while oiling. Because, even I do and I got classic length hair!

Step 4:

Let the oil sit on your hair. Now we are going to prepare the spa mask. It softens, conditions, strengthens hair.. adds bounce to it like a magic! Believe me; it softens hair like anything when used along with the MABH hair oil. I do it once/twice a week or after a bad hair week.

So. Steps!

Grate a fresh coconut and squeeze the thick milk from it. You can also grind the coconut and filter it but I prefer the grate and squeeze method. (Its not my own idea. Got it from a Youtube hair guru) If you think the process is time consuming/messy, I suggest you to use a ready-made one but please do know homemade is the best!

For my classic length hair, I need half a cup of thick coconut milk. To this, I add 2-3 heaped teaspoons of dried rose petal powder. You can easily get the rose petal powder from Indian ayurvedic/herbal shops. If you don’t, then collect, dry and grind fresh paneer rose petals. They smell like heaven! (If you want to buy it online, you can try the Etheric Rose Petal Powder on Amazon! I heard from people it works great!)

add rose powder to coconut milk

Mix both into a very smooth (not watery) paste and add 2-3 drops of pure Vitamin E oil to it. This is for extra nourishment; however this is an optional step. If you don’t have vitamin E oil you can substitute it with coconut/olive oil!

Step 5:

We have already oiled and massaged the scalp! So its easy peasy to apply the mask. Part your hair into 2 or 4 and evenly apply the mask covering your entire scalp. Now work on to the ends of your hair as well. Refer the picture. Though it is not smooth as store bought (silicone filled) masks, I love how cooling it is! You can use a good quality hair brush to make your work easy but I use my hands.

After application, cover your hair with a shower cap and allow the formula to work on your hair and scalp. My hair doesn’t fit into my favorite pink shower cap anymore. :( so I used a soft towel to cover and tie up my hair.

Leave this mask on for 1-2 hours! You can even leave it on for 3 hours and go back to your work as it is not at all going to do any harm.

P.S: Wear an old or your most disliked T shirt/tank top.

Step 6:

Now rinse your hair with a mild (SLS & Paraben free if possible) shampoo. Condition it if necessary. It may take 2 rinses to remove the (heavy-moisturizing) mask completely! After rinsing, dab the hair gently with a soft cotton towel.

Step 7:

Avoid hair dryers or any kind of heat instruments to dry out your hair. Let it dry naturally after this treatment. It will naturally smooth out the hair and gives it a more straighter look.

You are definitely going to love your hair now! Touch it.. feel the difference :)

My Results:

This is how my hair looked after this spa. I haven’t used any blow dryer or straightener here. I’ve even skipped the conditioning part after rinsing my hair (with my hair wash powder + milk mixture).

Hope you find this tutorial useful. Use this mask for once a week at least for best results. Its a multitasking DIY recipe that benefits your hair in enormous ways. It softens dry hair, repairs the damage, strengthen the roots and prevent split ends. On the top of everything, it makes hair shiny in a single day. Do try it at home and share with me your comments!

I also suggest you to check my DIY hot oil treatment tutorial to know how to make your hair shinier and more healthier instantly! It requires no coconut milk and no rose petal powder but still works great! I alternate the recipes (this spa and the hot oil treatment!) to keep my hair well nourished!

I created the blog in 2011 during my high school days and then went on to regret the domain name. More than writing, I love my kitchen-experiments; currently hoarding cast iron pans.
