How to Make Mattifying Day Cream at Home? [Photo Tutorial]

Posted on October 20, 2012October 4, 2013 by Lanceek

Hello Everyone!
This is going to be a fun tutorial today. I made this DIY day cream when I was sorting out the products in my skincare case. I had some products those I don’t use regularly on my normal-oily skin but did not want to throw them either. If I keep them without using, they will hit the expiry date.
When I was deeply thinking to recycle and experiment with those products, I suddenly got an idea of preparing a mattifying day cream out of them. For the mattifying effect, I needed some loose powder and the other things I needed are some a moisturizer and SPF cream and such to prepare this DIY recipe. This day cream of course doesn’t stay all day long on your face but you can use this for nearby shopping visits and quick outings! When I don’t feel like layering up my face with a moisturizer, then a SPF and then a compact, I simply put on this cream and get set! And that’s it I am ready to go! Check below to find how the recipe turned out.

Things you will need:

  • Some loose powder or a compact (That matches your skin tone)
  • A moisturizer
  • A sunscreen lotion
  • A soothing skin gel (Optional)
  • An empty container (I used the Lakme Perfect Radiance Fairness Cream tub)
  • A clean spoon or a spatula

Here I have used the Lakme Rose Powder in Warm Pink shade. You can either use some loose powder or a compact for this DIY day cream. Just scrape some compact to use it in your recipe. Both the Garnier Light Moisturizer and the Maybelline BB Cream (In shade radiance; and oops it’s a wrong shade for my skin!) gave a whitish caste finish on my skin and hence I wanted to finish them off :P by mixing and matching them in my DIY recipes. They both had good SPF factor and that is enough for short visits and nearby shopping step outs right? So I used them both as moisturizer come sunscreen in this recipe. You can also use a separate moisturizer and sunscreen to make this mattifying day cream. If you have oily skin and couldn’t use those dewy finish products on your skin, welcome them to this recipe :D and you will get that mattifying effect! Come let us move on to the steps now.

Step 1:
Clean your empty container and dry it. You can use your old day cream tub or some other tub that is travel friendly, sturdy and leak proof. I have used one of my favorite tubs here, the one in which the Lakme Perfect Radiance Fairness Day Cream comes. It is cute pink, classy looking metallic tub. After cleaning and drying, put in some loose powder to it. Prepare a small amount first; if it does well then we can prepare more.

Step 2:
Now put in your moisturizer and SPF cream to the tub. I have prepared my DIY day cream with the loose powder, moisturizer and sunscreen in the ratio of 1:2:2. I did not use a separate moisturizer and a sunscreen but combined both the Garnier Light Moisturizer and the Maybelline BB cream for a ‘moisturizer come sunscreen’ effect. If you want to skip the SPF and just want a light day cream, go for moisturizer + powder without adding any tinted creams or SPF. Make sure that you do not include more powder then it will be hard blending the cream onto the skin.

Step 3:
This is an optional step. You can either include or skip this but I included some soothing skin gel to this DIY day cream for ease of application. By adding this gel, the consistency of the cream becomes smooth and moreover, the cream spreads smoothly without settling into patches. I have used the Prakriti Herbals Soothing Rose Aloe Gel here. You can also use any other store bought aloe gel for this purpose.

Step 4:
In this final step, mix everything together well with the spatula without any lumps to make your day cream smooth. Swatch test it on  your hand and on your clean face. If everything is fine, then stick to the same ratio and prepare a tub full of cream for your usage! This can be said as either your day cream or a light coverage foundation for daily usage.

Tada.. Here is the day cream I prepared! It gives a nice glowing matte finish to my facial skin without leaving it dry. The coverage is light and it stays good for 2-3 hours. I do not need to layer my facial skin with moisturizer, SPF and compact hereafter when stepping out for short visits :) Just a blob of this DIY day cream does a perfect job!

Store this DIY Mattifying Day Cream in refrigerator and use a spatula to take out the product every time. This extends the shelf life of the product. If you have dry skin, you can add extra moisturizing creams to this recipe to make sure it suits your skin type.

Hey Thank you Hemlata! :) It depends on the moisturizing cream/lotion you include in this cream. Which one do you use at present?
