Can Long Hair Cause Headaches? This is How I Get Rid of Them!

Hi, people! Today, I’m writing about something that visits me often. A headache.. due to the weight of my hair. Sounds unusual? It used to be ‘every single day’ but with the help of a few ideas and without giving up the length of my hair, I now know how to shoo away headaches easily.

So yes, having long hair is not all fairytales; I must be honest with you, there are a good number of cons when it comes to maintaining a long mane but if you love your hair as much I as love mine, those shouldn’t be a problem. You must find ways to fix them and I’m going to suggest you how to overcome one such con (a headache!) today! Read on to know how I help myself not to hate my hair for giving me headaches!

Sporting a loose bun. I sometimes get lazy to braid!

1. No to ‘Ponytails’, Yes to ‘Braids’! : This has helped me a LOT in not getting headaches due to my heavy hair! It has literally been ages since I wore a ponytail. I love ponytails but it’s just that my head cannot handle it. I’d end up with a terrible headache if I try one! If you’ve long hair i.e hair below your waist, it’s wise not to wear ponytails often. The pressure causes tension at the hair roots since the nerves run underneath them. It can also weaken the roots of your hair strands in a long run and cause hair loss. Braids, on the other hand, are so hair friendly and they help my hair stay in place. I wear loose braids every day when I work in front of my laptop; when I cook; when I drive. Braid is hands-down the most comfortable hairstyle for long, heavy hair. Loose braids = no headache! Braiding your hair also reduces breakage.

For me, braided hair translates to RELIEF!

2. I maintain my hair clean: I wash my hair every day or at least every other day (pre-oiling is a must!) and it makes my scalp feel light. A build-up of dust, moisture and oils can weigh down your hair and in turn cause headaches, especially when your hair is LONG! So make sure your hair is clean, all the time. If you’re oiling it/moisturizing it for some reason, make sure you try nothing other than braids.

3. I don’t add more weight to my hair/scalp: Not just the heavy hair clips, something like a hairpin that is tight on your scalp can trigger a headache! I have personally experienced this. Hence, I make sure that I use nothing on my hair other than two tic-tac clips at a time. Too many bobby pins, hair extensions, heavy hair bands are big NO-NOs! At least spare them for occasions. When you’re at home or at work, go for braids. (My suggestion, you won’t regret!)

4. I avoid wearing my hair up: Now this can really make your head hurt especially if you do the updo in a tight manner. The weight bundles up at one place of your scalp (the same ponytail concept!) and this acts an instant headache trigger for many. I don’t do hair updos unless it’s extremely necessary. I prefer loose buns (If I don’t have time to braid or something like that!) and they just fit right, as shown in the first photo of this post. Not as comfortable as braids though.

5. I flaunt open hair: Except for that it can get your hair really tangled, wearing your hair loose is the best way to prevent headaches. I love how my hair feels on my shoulder whenever I let it loose. (My hair makes me feel warm!) I sometimes go to bed with no braids and I do fine. I love wearing my hair open whenever I wear a saree and I love how it looks! There’s a myth that untied hair can cause slower hair growth but my hair grew faster when I didn’t tie up my hair. (My hair sort of craves freedom as I do, it seems!) So yes, open hair is NEVER going to cause you a headache. Just make sure you don’t break it much during the detangling process later.

That’s it for today! These are the five ways I follow to prevent headaches caused due to the weight of my hair! (Other kinds of headaches are sometimes unpreventable, you see!) So these ideas apply to those with heavy, short hair as well. The heavier your hair gets, the more prone you’re to a nasty headache. Flaunt your hair; love your braids. And your hair will thank you. Do NOT cut your hair just because it gives you a headache. It won’t if you treat it right! :)

P.S : Before working on this post, I did a mini research on the topic and found out that many women regretted cutting their hair in hopes of putting an end to their headache issues. It hardly helped, they say. So think twice, before getting a hair cut. Chopping your hair off is not always the solution!

  1. Wow… I too have long hair below waist and get headaches often. But didn’t know they could be caused due to long hair. I often wear my hair up in a tight bun with clips. Probably that could be the reason. Will try your above tips for sure. Such a unique and informative post. Thanks for sharing…
