DIY Turmeric Milk Drink Recipe : The One Shot Fix to My Pimples!

O my God! I have a date tomorrow and what is that? Don’t tell me.. a zit! So what options do I have? Neem face pack? Ummm done! Sandalwood powder? Still to get hold of original sandalwood powder which doesn’t burn a hole in my pocket! Multani mitti? Doesn’t seem like working for me anymore! Regular cleanups? Not at all comfortable with anyone messing up with my face!!

So if you are an oily skinned girl like me who gazes at the mirror a zillion times just to check that nasty pimple along her jaw line which has popped out of nowhere, you can probably relate to all that I have stated above!

I am an Ayurvedic student with a strong belief staunchly embedded in my head that the solution to every problem lays inside us! The cleaner our bodies are from inside, the better it appears on the outside. With toxins inside your material body, no matter how many fancy named cosmetics you apply on your face, the effect is not going to show up!

Keeping all this in mind, today, I have come up with a DIY drink which has helped me in combating my pimples and their marks and at the same time, adding a glow to the face without off course creating a huge hole in my tiny college-student sized pocket!

So, for today’s DIY, our hero is ‘turmeric’ or ‘haldi’ which forms an indispensable part of our Indian cuisine, holds a very special place in every ritual and not to forget, holds an irreplaceable position in our beloved DIYs!

Let’s get started!

Things you’ll need :

  • An inch of turmeric tuber (I would HIGHLY recommend you to use the whole turmeric tuber instead of the powder available in the market which might be adulterated with colorants!)
  • 250 ml of cow’s milk (IF you are lactose intolerant, you can go for plain water instead!)
  • Two to three peppercorns (if using whole) otherwise less than a quarter teaspoon of black pepper powder!
  • An inch of cinnamon (if using whole) otherwise less than a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon powder
  • A small dollop of cow’s ghee
  • A mortar and pestle
  • A strainer

ingredients

How do I make it?

Grind in the turmeric tuber along with the cinnamon stick and pepper corns using your mortar-pestle. You can also use a coffee grinder if you’re going to grind in larger quantities. After grinding, add the mixture to the milk and boil it on a flame till the milk turns light yellow in color.

The final thing would look something like this! (refer the pictures below!) Strain the mixture in a glass. You may add sugar if you wish. I have skipped sugar because it is apparently ‘not so good’ for the skin!

My experience with this drink!

I, though, never ever had a full bout of acne *touchwood* but have always suffered with two or three pimples popping on the face here and there especially at the time of the month when Aunt Rose is about to arrive and I can proudly say that this drink has completely helped me with those pesky ‘period pimples’. Also, due to the blood purifying properties of this drink, I have noticed a visible lightening of my pimple marks! Not to forget, the elixir has added in a slight glow to my face!

A little snippet of information on WHY it works : Turmeric acts directly on the ‘Rasa dhatu’ of the body. Our body is made up of seven dhatus according to Ayurveda and ‘Rasa’ is the pioneer ‘dhatu’ of our body which is responsible for clear skin, regulated menstrual cycles and a healthy immune system!

Black pepper along with cow’s ghee when added into cow’s milk is excellent for improving the ‘Rasa dhatu’ and thereby imparting a clear skin and a healthy glow!

And not to forget, I have been drinking this for like the past two months though not religiously, and I can say that I fall ill very less. I mean the coughs and colds who paid their religious visits every now and then now seem to be like very distant relatives!

You can yourselves try and see the results of this drink on yourselves. Also, if you are allergic to any of the ingredients used above don’t try this drink but as a matter of fact turmeric alone can fight sensitivities to a lot of allergies!

Editor’s Note : I loved this recipe and I’m very curious to try it out! To prepare this you will ofcourse need pure turmeric root as Oshin shared! If you do not get whole turmeric tubers, you can still try an organic turmeric powder! Do not go for inorganic ones since they can contain chemicals/artificial colors. However, it’s still recommended to use the turmeric root if it’s available near your place! (You can easily get it from Indian grocery stories!)

Original turmeric not only purifies the blood but it also acts as a topical treatment for skin pigmentation and scars. Proof – the Vicco Tumeric skin cream, which is a hit among Indian women!
