DIY Lacto Turmeric Tan Removal Face Pack : Step by Step Photo Tutorial

One fine morning, I woke up cursing the sun as usual; I was about to make tea for my mom. And guess what? The unfortunate happened! The milk started curdling as soon as I lit the stove. Bam!

Loss of milk is another thing but it is considered a ‘bad luck’ in my place if the milk curdles for no reason! (I’m a non-believer though!) However, I managed to figure the reason behind the mishap is none other than my dad; he had totally forgotten to store the milk in the refrigerator before the sunrise. Considering the hot weather in Chennai, it is no wonder the milk has curdled! Nevertheless, I made tea for my mom with freshly boiled milk later. She loves ginger tea! (but hates it if I suggest her to use honey instead of white sugar! Err)

So where did all the curdled milk go?! Into my DIY tan removal face pack! (Trust me, IT works!)

Let me share my experience with you now!

Note: I did NOT purposely curdle the milk (in case if you’re reading this, mom!) to try this face pack and hence I would suggest you to use thick yogurt or Greek yogurt instead. If you still want to use curdled milk, you can use few drops of lemon juice to curdle the milk and then filter it from the whey!

You’ll be needing only two ingredients for the recipe! ~ Curdled milk and turmeric powder!

Steps

Filter the milk curdles from the whey! Make sure there’s less to no moisture left. If it is too watery, you will not be getting the face pack consistency right. Powder raw dried turmeric or use read made turmeric powder.

If you’re bothered about staining, use Kasturi turmeric instead! Here I’ve used the normal turmeric powder (borrowed it from mom for the recipe!) You can also try the Etheric Kasturi Turmeric Powder!

To the bowl of milk curdles you get from 500 ml of milk (or yogurt) add 1 heaped teaspoon of turmeric powder! This is the basic ratio however you can add more or less according to your interest. For me, a pinch of turmeric does nothing! I’d really want the goodness of turmeric in my pack so I’ve added a whole teaspoon.

Mix the ingredients well with a clean spoon. At first, it might look lumpy but as you blend it, it will turn into a smooth (slightly frothy) paste. You’re done with the preparation! Cover this bowl and store it in the refrigerator safely (if you will be using it within 24 hours). If you want to use it all the week, add a teaspoon each to ice cube tray and freeze the cubes. Done!

I highly suggest to use it as soon as you make it. In my case, I made a batch for the whole week (as I had curdles from 1/2 liter of the milk) so I’m freezing it! If not stored in the freezer, it should be used within 24 hours. You cannot take risks with your skin. Dairy products go bad fast so keep your eyes on it.

Add turmeric powder to the curlded milk!

Mix well!

Lumpy? Mix well for some more time!

Ready!

How do I use it? : The face pack itself has cleansing properties and hence you will not need a separate cleanser prior to the usage however if you feel ‘cleansing’ is mandatory before a face pack, use a mild cleanser. Today, I used the Dr.Batra’s moisturizing face wash to cleanse my face before I applied the pack. (It is a SLS free product!)

Apply the face pack evenly on your facial skin. It should apply as smoothly as your store bought masks. I did not add a separate moisturizing ingredient/oil to this pack as milk acts as a great moisturizer by itself. It also is able to naturally cleanse/bleach your skin. Turmeric acts as a skin-clearing agent! It helps me get rid of my heat bump/acne scars;I’ve never encountered a best natural tan remover as effective as turmeric! So, these two make a good combination. (Mind you, I love tanned skin.. that deep chocolate tinge.. but it’s just that I hate the uneven patches that I get after the sun exposure!)

After letting the face pack on my skin for 10 to 15 minutes, I wash it off with clean cold water. If the consistency of the face pack is too thick, you can add few drops of milk or water prior to the application. And if the pack feels stretchy on your skin, dab a wet cotton to prevent the stretchy feel. You should be okay!

How does the face pack help me? : This lacto face pack, though homemade works as effective as few of the best tan removal products in the market! On the top of it, it neither contains a preservative nor contains any other chemical. My skin feels extremely soft, hydrated and smooth after every usage! It does not make my skin oily, dry or ‘ghastly white’ but it brings that natural glow! Within a week of usage, it removes my tan visibly. (People can notice it too!) But staying at home/avoiding sun exposure is important to let it work as the pack can turn your skin photo sensitive! (Turmeric, you see!)

Going out in the sun after using this pack might lead to more bad than good! So I suggest that you avoid sun exposure (even if it’s mild) at least for two weeks after using this face pack. And make sure to use it only during the evenings/nights. It should really help you clear out your skin as no other formula! I’d also suggest you to check this post on 5 homemade tan removal recipes, shared by our writer Rashmita! If you’re someone who suffers from acne/pigmentation but you feel you’re not into topical skin care treatments much, do check Oshin’s Turmeric milk drink recipe with step by step tutorial on how she makes it at her home! (By drinking it everyday for 2 months, she got rid of her pimples and added a glow to her skin!)

P.S: This pack pretty much suits every skin type BUT if the milk curdles  that you’re using turns out be more fatty/greasy, you will need a separate cleanser post usage. Dry skin? You can ignore the cleansing part and enjoy the hydration!

P.P.S: Did you like the images on this post? This is my first try with flat lay photography! I won’t be using a white background every time (I love colors!) however I did use a thermacol this time. It looks a bit harsh on the photos. Any smooth-white backdrop ideas? I’d appreciate your suggestions!

  1. do we have to boil the milk first to curdle it or just to put lemon juice in raw milk … sorry if i am sounding idiot actually i have read about tanning pack sin which they add lemon juice in simple raw milk to make chenna to remove tan .. so just want to be sure of what exactly i have to do ?

    1. I’m not so sure about it Ritu! For me, adding lemon juice in boiling milk helps the mild solids separate from the whey (in a minute or two!). Not sure about how it’d work in raw milk though. I will have to check that on the internet!

  2. This sounds like a great and easy DIY lancy. I generally use kasturi manjal with besan and curd. Would be giving your DIY a try as well. Thanks for sharing.

    1. I’ve a normal-oily skin that leans more towards the ‘oilier’ side in summer! However, the pack still suits me! But my face doesn’t stay oil free afterwards. I love the hydrating effect it gives! It leaves my skin soft. But not oil-free!

Nevertheless, Jyoti is right! If you’ve an oily skin that gets super oily in hot weather, you can use a mild face wash post-usage. If you can manage the slight shine, then leave it as it is for best results! (This is why I suggest to use the pack at evenings/nights!)
