Today, I’m solving few reader queries (related to shaving myths!) and I shall also be talking about the demerits of another hair removal technique I’d followed in the past.
Shaving changes the texture/thickness of your hair : This is one of the myths I USED to believe in the past! I always had thought shaving would cause hair grow more thicker on my hands and feet. This is the only reason why I hadn’t touched razor for years. However, after doing a little research I managed to learn that shaving does NOT change the texture/growth/thickness of the hair on the body! Nothing does, as it is related to other factors such as genetics. The thing is that, the hair that grows after shaving looks a bit thicker since we are removing the tip of the hair strand, which is naturally thinner compared to the body of the hair!
The structure of the hair strand goes thicker near the roots and thinner at the ends. So when the shaving happens, the root is left underneath and the hair strand that sprouts outside out skin is getting shaved. Hence, when the hair grows back, the thicker end comes out creating an illusion of ‘thicker hair’ after shaving!
To sum it up, the hair strand that grows from the root has a natural end (that is thinner due to the natural structure of the hair) whereas the hair that grows after shaving has no end as it is trimmed off near the root (the new growth pushes the thicker part up)! Hence,do no worry about the thickness if that’s the reason if you are staying away from shaving. Your hair is never going to turn thin, thick, long or short.. or anything! No hair removal method actually impact your natural hair structure and growth.
Does my skin get itchy after shaving? : NO! If done the proper way, you will be left with no itchiness behind. The quality of the razor and your shaving gel plays an important role too! If you shave you skin the right away, there’s no chance for itchiness since you are only removing the extra hair and it does not harm your skin in any way. If you are very concerned, you can put on a cool lotion over your skin soon after you finish the process. I use aloe vera/cucumber based lotions to calm down my that has been shaving!
Hair Removal Creams? : Honestly, I do not like hair removal creams! I’ve suffered a lot with hair removal creams in the past. They make my skin rough and dull after each usage; and the thing is, the darkness along with the dryness looks ‘ashy’. It’s not the healthy tan kinds I get, that I really love! And then, sun exposure after the hair removal cream usage irritates my skin more and leads to a sun burn. I’m not sure if this happens with all hair removal creams/or the ones I tried had too much of chemicals but so far, I’ve only had bad experiences with hair removal creams!
Now after I switched to shaving, I experience no itchiness, no bad tan and nothing that actually affects the nature of my skin! So comparing that way, I could vouch for shaving since it is safe, quick and has no side effects since I’m not putting some chemical on my skin to get rid of the hair!
