How to Do a Hot Oil Treatment for Hair? : Tutorial

Hello people!

Today, I am going to share with you a tutorial on how to do a spa-like hot oil hair treatment at home. Lately, I mentioned about it on my monsoon hair care routine. I do it often to make my hair manageable, dandruff free and silky – after which I use the rose coconut hair spa mask (DIY recipe). So this is how I do a simple treatment at home with warm oil, to get softer hair instantly either along with the mask, or without it. This can be done easily in an hour or two; but mind you, the results will be something you love!

Comb and Detangle Your Hair

The de-tangling process should be done before you get the oil ready. If not, the oil will again come down to the room temperatue in mean time you comb you hair. Be prepared with detangled hair before you start. I recommend using a wide tooth comb.

P.S: I am eyeing out for a good wooden comb. Any suggestions?

Choose Your Hair Oil

I am using the MABH fast growth hair oil here. The herbal formula helps with the hair growth and volumizing parts as well, other than just softening my hair. However, you can also proceed this with plain coconut oil or olive oil. Kindly avoid any scented/colored hair oils that you get in the market. (Check if they contain mineral oil; if yes, don’t even go near to them!)

Prepare Your Hot Oil

It doesn’t mean you should pour boiling oil on your scalp for a ‘hot’ oiling treatment. Using VERY hot oil actually does more bad than the good. The oil you use should be moderately hot, on the ‘bearable side’. It penetrates deeper into your scalp, strengthen the roots and leaves you hair silky. Let me show you how to prepare the oil before massage.

For this, I am not directly heating up the oil as it would kill the goodness of herbs present in it. I am first boiling some water in a sauce pan and then placing the oil bowl over it. (Use a small steel bowl) This way, the hot water warms up the oil without messing up with the goodness of it.

The Massage Treatment!

Here comes the relaxing part. Make sure your hands are clean and apply some warm oil on your palms and finger tips. Now put it on your scalp giving slight pressure. You should not give too much pressure during the massage – it may result in unwanted SHED!

Cover all the parts of your scalp with the oil and use your finger tips for the massage. Do it for 3-10 minutes depending on the time you spare for it. Once you are done with the scalp massage, now go ahead and apply the oil throughout the strands of your hair covering all the ends. Apply a tad more on split end prone area.

Now gently tie your hair into a bun or you can either opt for braiding. I usually go with braids as my head gets too heavy if I make a hair bun. That gives me a headache!

Leave on the oil to work on your hair and scalp for at least 1 hour. You can let it sit for 2-3 hours if that is comfortable for you. After that, give your hair a gentle rinse with your favorite hair cleanser. The results will be more good if the cleanser is herbal, mild and SLS free. I use my regular Shikakai powder mixed with curd and two drops of Vitamin E oil. (It requires two washes as shikakai doesn’t lather)

P.S: You can also use a good hair mask after the oiling treatment for best results!! I often use the rose hair mask which you can see on the picture below. I already shared the recipe on the blog. Do check it out!

The Results!!

After the treatment, my hair feels so silky and soft to touch! I am loving it all the day.

Important tip : Once done with the rinsing pair, very gently dab your hair with a cotton town and let it air dry. Don’t use blow dryers please! And don’t squeeze your hair or tie it up tightly in order to remove the moisture. It will turn the hair dry and cause breakage.

Did you like the tutorial? It is one of the very simple and effective hot oil treatments for damaged hair. It repairs, nourishes and conditions your hair from within. You will be feeling it when you touch you hair! Do try it at home and share with me your comments.
