Hair Fall Control Hair Wash Powder Recipe & SLS, Paraben, Silicone Free Shampoo List

“Which shampoo should I use with MABH Fast Growth Hair Oil?”

I’ve been asked this question over 1000 times literally in the last 6 months! I know I am very late posting this article; (I can hear you all bashing at me inside your head) I really apologize to everyone of you for the delay! Lately I have been both busy and ill. :( The bad weather and some personal worries took a toll on me and I had been very depressed and gloomy. I Now that I am getting better, I am sharing this post will you all with a list of SLS and paraben free shampoos I collected.

Hair Wash Powder Recipe – Alternative to Shampoos:

Before you go through the list, I would like to suggest a natural alternative to your regular shampoo. It is a non lathering, powdered hair cleanser, but still a NATURAL recipe. It doesn’t contain SLS, paraben, silicone or something harsh. And gives you fabulous results if used regularly. If you can adjust with the non-lathering factor, go ahead and try the recipe at home. I’ve mentioned about our hair wash powder in my mom’s hair growth journey post. Its not the exact recipe because we add many herbs and other ingredients to the actual one to increase its effectiveness, as it is a long (costly!) process. Now what I share is the a base recipe of it. It works good too! (Its VERY much better than the lathering shampoos) It is easy to make and you can do it yourself in minutes.

Ingredients Needed:
  • 100 gm dried shikakai
  • 50 gm dried green gram
  • 50 gm fenugreek

How to Make?

Dry the ingredients in sunlight for 5-6 hours. And finely grind them all together! The process is over. If you want a more finer powder (which is more easy to rinse off) then you can sieve the powder and store it in an air tight container. You can also prepare it in huge quantities but make sure you use it within 6 months. My mom told me she used this powder for years from her childhood and they used to make it in kilograms for their big family. So try it at home and let me know how it worked. If you are a lazy lass, then wait for me to put up the more effective ‘herbal’ hair wash powder for sale on our site :) It is an improved version, with herbs and hair growth, hair softening ingredients present in it!

P.S: You have to mix the prepared powder (shikakai, green gram, fenugreek mixture) with curd/milk and two drops of any pure oil (optional; do this only if you have dry hair). If you have heavily oiled your hair, you should do two rinses with it. I always do two rinses with my hair wash powder if I oil my hair. For my classic length hair, I use 2-3 heaped teaspoons if I oil and only 2 teaspoons on non-oiled hair. It controls hair fall, cleanses hair thoroughly, reduces dandruff, promotes hair growth and makes hair shinier with regular usage. Go read my detailed photo tutorial on how I make the hair wash cream at home out of hair wash powder.

Shampoo List:

Okay, now coming to the shampoo list. These shampoos are good as per the reviews online. I haven’t used them personally on my hair (as I only use our powder) except for The Nature’s Co Sandalwood Cleanser. However, shampoo selection is not an easy task, to be honest. Some super duper shampoo your friend talked about might have really killed your hair in the past (Anyone horrible experiences with raved hair products?). It depends on the hair type, climatic condition etc. So trial and error method works, till you find ‘your’ shampoo. I highly recommend you to try the hair wash powder recipe I mentioned above if shampoos give you hair fall. I know its a time-taking task, but its worth it.

Why No Silicone? :

Silicone is used in shampoos and conditioners to add bounce to your hair, make it silky and manageable. Exciting? but wait. On the darker side it coats your hair, settles on your scalp, disallows hair oils/masks to penetrate, makes it hard for your hair follicle to breathe and damages your hair with regular usage. Check the ingredients of your shampoo. If something ends with ‘cone’ or ‘one’ then it has silicones. Mansi has listed out some great points on how bad silicone is for hair.

Why No SLS?:

An SLS (sulfate) based shampoo lathers a lot compared to a mild herbal shampoo, shikakai or whatever. It gives a feel that it is thoroughly cleansing your hair and scalp but in reality, it is very harsh for your delicate scalp skin and hair. SLS is used as a base in detergents so why use it on your hair? So when a shampoo or hair wash powder without SLS lathers really a little and fail to give glossy hair unlike silicone shampoos, don’t blame it. Instead, learn to rinse your hair twice. (It won’t take much time with practice! I am a living example) This way, you can get rid of oiliness and protect your hair from chemicals as well. You will start realizing how fast your hair grows (that too healthily) after ditching these chemical based hair cleansers.

Why No Paraben?:

To be true, I am not aware of the exact reasons why it is bad for your hair. (I really have to surf for the answers online) but I believe paraben is a preservative used in cosmetics that harms your skin and hair. Somewhere I heard it causes pre-mature aging. So do you still want it in your shampoo?

sls paraben silicone free shampoos in india

1. The Body Shop Rain Forest Shampoo:

Its one of the best SLS, Paraben and Silicone free shampoos available in the market today. There are very less shampoos that don’t contain SLS and its one of those. The Rain forest shampoo from TBS comes in different variants – suitable for oily hair, dry hair etc. You have to find the right one for you. It cleanses your hair naturally and leaves it smooth and tangle free. However you might end up finishing the bottle very soon if you have very long hair and you like to lather a lot before rinsing your hair – because the shampoo lathers less compared to the other shampoos (Due to absence of SLS) Some might also find it pricey.

2. Khadi Herbal Shikakai Shampoo:

This shampoo has been raved by many girls I know. Only few complained that it made their hair dry. If used properly, one can overcome the dryness with natural shampoos. People who got practiced with silicone filled shampoos find it little uneasy to adapt to SLS, silicone free shampoos but after all, ‘going natural’ is always better than using something bad on your hair.

3. V Care Shikakai Paste

This is another shampoo, hair wash paste which is free from sulfate (SLS) and paraben. Harini reviewed it here on the blog and gave it a 4/5 rating. Read here complete review on V care shikakai paste. The review has everything about it. Other than the fact it lathers less, it works pretty good on the hair. I am in two  minds whether to give this one a try or not.

4. Himalaya Herbals Anti-Hair Fall (New) Shampoo

I’ve read few VERY negative reviews on this shampoo and some positive reviews but I still list it here because it doesn’t contain SLS, paraben or silicone and one more thing, all those reviewers didn’t mention anywhere it caused them hair fall/side effects or something but they just mentioned it made their hair ‘DRY’. It lathers very less (I guess it will lather decently in the second rinse) so you need to use more amount than usual; as it doesn’t contain SLS. When you don’t cleanse your hair properly and dry it post-wash, it always looks dry and lifeless. (Even with shikakai, it happens but only if you don’t cleanse the oil properly) I am still not sure whether this shampoo is that bad because Himalaya Herbals is one of my favorite brands. Just because of not lathering, one cannot blame a shampoo without chemicals. Let me try it on my hair sometime and give a detailed review here.

5. The Nature’ Co Sandalwood Hair Cleanser Cum Conditioner

I love this shampoo and its my ever time favorite travel hair cleanser. When I am at my relatives’ place I cannot mix curd to the powder and then oil and then shampoo – my relatives will think I am a weirdo :P So I skip the hair wash cream (rarely) and shampoo once a while with this. (strictly no SLS) This shampoo is thin in consistency, beige in color and leaves hair smooth! My mom has used it and liked it too. It is also free from SLS and paraben and made of hill spring water. You can read my detailed review on this TNC Sandalwood Shampoo on here MABH.

  3. If I am not mistaken, Dove Hair Fall shampoo range is also free of silicon. It contains SLS though. It works on my hair. I have been using Palmolive shampoo for quite some time. My hair was all nice and bouncy when I started using it some time back. I received tonnes of complements on my hair. Then recently, my hair starts falling a lot. I tried Dove Hair Fall shampoo and conditioner. In just 2 hair washes, I can see the changes.

At first i tried it on my heavely oiled hair but it just not washed it out even if i washed it 4 times… My hair came out as very sticky with particles all over.

  10. Hi,

I am 25 yr old(Female). I work in IT sector in bangalore. and once in a month for a week i work in night shift also. when i moved to Bangalore 2 yr back, my hairs were fine. But now…lot of hairfall and dandruff (itching). I am irritated with my hairfall …everywhere in my room, my bed…everywhere. and because of dandruff i have pimples on my forehead also. I think its mainly because of water that doesnt suit me. The reason i am saying this is because when i go to my hometown in north india…within 10 days my forehead is clear of pimples. so possibility ard water of bangalore is responsible for hairloss and dandruff.

Please prescribe me something. I dont want to go to doctor and have chemical treatment.
Is “The Nature’ Co Sandalwood Hair Cleanser Cum Conditioner” shampoo will be good for me as i am having dandruff problem also? I have read somewhere that oil can lead to dandruff more.
