Avon Supershock Max Waterproof Black Mascara Review

A few months back, Avon released its Supershock Mascara. The mascara claims to have a ‘weightless formula and unique helix brush’ and claims to ‘enhance the thickness of lashes by 15 times volume.’ (How do they measure that? Don’t ask me because I’m studying engineering and I’ll actually try to come up with a mathematical answer that’ll turn this review into a snooze fest :P)

Price:

Original price is Rs. 499 for 10g but you can get it for much less since it’s often on discount (for instance currently it is available for 329 INR, which is the price at which I got it.)

My Take:

Packaging: The mascara comes in a cylindrical light weight plastic tube that is a marvelous shade of teal. It is glossy and shiny and looks so posh. Easy to identify and a treat for the eyes :D the cap screws on quite tightly so there is no danger of leakage or drying up of the mascara. So far, full marks!

Brush/wand: The brush of this mascara is what makes it unique. It’s quite unlike any other mascara brush that I’ve seen. It’s relatively larger and very light weight. The bristles are extremely short, and there are so many, all around the brush. They are placed in a spiral/helix arrangement such that no lashes can escape the brush.

Consistency: The consistency of the mascara is definitely not runny. It’s quite on the thick side which is partly why the increase in volume is so intense. The weightless part sure is right, the tube feels like it has nothing in it! It doesn’t feel heavy on my lashes either.

Staying power: Once you apply this mascara, it’s here to stay. It doesn’t budge! It is completely and totally waterproof. You’re free to dance in the rain or cry a river wearing this. You have to use a very strong make up remover to remove it. I use the Ayur cleansing milk and it takes quite a while to clean it up.

So how was my experience with this mascara? In one word: love it. (Okay two words but whatever)

The consistency of the mascara makes it a bit tricky to apply. If you’re not careful, you may end up with slightly clumped lashes, which can be hard to separate out even with a lash comb. But the volume and the length that this mascara gives are excellent. Have a look at the pictures and see for yourself :)

( I’m sorry my eyes look so tired! The left side pics show two coats of the mascara while the right side show bare lashes, so that you can compare!)

On applying one coat of the mascara, you can see the difference in length. And an increase in volume is also noticeable. The increase in volume is build able – it can be increased further by applying a second coat but be very careful while doing so, because this is when the mascara tends to get slightly clumpy. You should wipe off the excess mascara on the back of your hand or against the mouth of the tube or else it’ll clump. This is especially important when applying the second coat.

PROS

  • Light weight, lovely packaging
  • True to its claims to quite an extent
  • Decently priced (especially if you get it on discount)
  • Waterproof and stays put for a long time

CONS

  • Prone to slight clumping (You can see slight clumping in the pics too.)

Rating: 4.5/5

Final word:

Like I said, I LOVE this mascara. I have long lashes but they are very sparse, and this gives me the volume I need plus it makes my lashes look even longer! It lengthens and increases the volume of my lashes to the extent of making them look like I’ve put on falsies. It is definitely a value for money and an absolute must-have. I’d recommend this mascara any day!

    1. Thanks Lancy :) I wear lenses and it doesn’t irritate my eyes on applying or on removing. I think it’ll be safe for sensitive eyes :)

    1. Thanks Dharu :) I don’t think so, it’s a reputable brand so I doubt they use unnecessary chemicals.. I don’t know about all their products but I can vouch for this mascara and the other Avon products I’ve tried :) if I get an update I’ll let you know :)
