Delhi summers are completely freaking me out. Coming to the point, my write up today is about these completely botanical substances called essential oils. I have tried and tested a few of them for myself like Rose oil, Jasmine oil and Peppermint oil and found them amazing. For all others, the points listed in this article are based on the reading I have done on this topic.
I must mention, some people also tend to develop allergies to certain oils. I would suggest, you to consult a good aromatherepist or somebody into Ayurveda, before you start harnessing the goodness of these things. Availability remains an issue with these. What is an essential oil?:
An essential oil is a liquid extracted from various parts of a plant or herb. The source of the oil could be the petals, leaves, roots, stem or even the bark. Essential oils are highly saturated and a only small quantities (few drops) are required by the user/skin. Usually, only a few drops suffice. Essential oils are used in diluted forms in some other carrier oils.
How to Use Essential Oils?:
Few drops of the essential oils can be added to the water used for bathing, manicures and pedicures. These can also be directly applied on skin by diluting them in olive oil or baby oil (that’s what I did with my peppermint oil, otherwise it stings a bit) for purpose of massage or to utilize their healing properties. There are certain essential oils like Eucalyptus, which are inhaled since it helps in relieving congestion. Tea tree oil can even be mixed with shampoo, as a solution for dandruff.
Below, I am going to describe properties of certain types of essential oils that are most commonly used for skin and beauty treatments.
1. Basil Essential Oil
It is a anti-bacterial/anti viral essential oil. Remember, your mothers telling you to have basil tea when you catch cold? So, it can be used for minor cuts on skin. (in diluted form)
2. Chamomile Essential Oil:
Relieves redness and inflamed skin. (Editors note: I have also heard that chamomile has skin lightening properties!) 🙂
3. Jasmine Essential Oil:
It helps in relieving anxiety and has a calming effect on brain. It helps in improving the texture of dry skin. Also, it helps soothe inflammation and redness. It also helps in regulating oil production from skin. It has been found useful in lightening stretch marks and scars. 4. Rose Essential Oil:
It’s aroma is an anti depressant. Rose Oil has anti ageing and skin renewing properties and to some extent managing skin problems related to hormonal issues for women. Here is a little tip to use this one, add a few drops to your bottle of rose water and use it as a face cleanser, everyday. You will start to enjoy a faint natural glow in a few days. Dabur Gulabari, even offers a variant with this oil as it’s component.
5. Sandalwood Oil:
It’s cooling and relaxing effect on skin is well known. Other less known facts are it acts as a remedy for dry skin, scars, and stretch marks. Add 3 or 4 drops of this oil to your powdered face pack and use on face and neck. It soothes down irritated skin, after bleaching.
6. Ylang Ylang Oil:
It helps in reducing pimples and acne associated with oily skin. It may help in people suffering from hair loss too.
7. Peppermint oil:
It has cooling properties. It helps in treating sun burnt skin to a large extent. To this, I am an eye witness. I got very bad sun burn on my arms last to last year. This oil mixed with a little glycerin helped me a lot. The smell was so strong, it even kept the mosquitoes away :p.
8. Tea Tree Oil:
It has anti bacterial properties and helps in reducing pimples. Also, it is an anti fungal agent so can be used to treat dandruff and the infections that develop in between our toes. This one can be mixed with shampoo for dandruff. For fungal infections of feet, use a few drops in the water you use for pedicure.
9. Lavender Oil: It again has aroma that relaxes the mind. It helps in combating dry skin and burn marks.
